The Church: The Body of Christ
Speaker: Tom Yacomeni
Series: Tenets
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27
1. Introduction: Hope in Uncertain Times
-
Remembrance Sunday reminds us of sacrifice, but also of the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, which brings hope over fear.
-
In a fragile and uncertain world, people need an eternal dependability.
-
God's extraordinary gift to help us cope with uncertainty is the church family.
2. We Are One Body, United in Hope
-
The church is one body with Jesus as our head, the source of our hope.
-
Jesus promised, "I will build my church," and it will keep growing.
-
Application: You are not alone or forgotten. You are loved, wanted, and known by God.
-
Like a physical body, "If one part suffers, every part suffers with it." (1 Cor. 12:26)
-
We rally around each other in pain, and we also rejoice together in hope (e.g., when members go to be with the Lord).
-
We need one another. Like bicycle pedals, when one is down, the other pushes on, moving us forward.
3. We Have the Mind of Christ
-
Through the Holy Spirit, the church has the "mind of Christ" (1 Cor. 2:16).
-
This allows us to declare God's wisdom, which the world cannot understand.
-
We must pray for our spiritual eyes to be opened and fixed on Jesus together.
4. Our Identity: The 'Angel' of All Saints
(Introducing the new membership and values booklet)
-
The church was the Holy Spirit's idea. Without Him, we are just a human organisation of "do-gooders." With Him, the world is changed.
-
Our Mission: To share the life and message of Jesus in Weston, Bath, and beyond.
-
Our Values (A Balanced Focus):
-
Upward: Loving God (Joyful worship, prayer).
-
Inward: Loving one another (United, caring, generous, welcoming).
-
Outward: Loving the world (Missional, local & global).
5. Practical Membership: The A-E
Membership isn't just a list; it's a practical commitment:
-
A | Attend regularly.
-
B | Belong to a small group (central to pastoral care).
-
C | Cheerfully give.
-
D | Do something (join a team).
-
E | Encourage others (invite, share, bless).
6. Conclusion: Our Foundation
-
Three things hold everything together: Prayer, Safeguarding, and Honour.
-
We are called to treat every part of the body with care.
Final Word (Romans 12:10-13):
"Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving theLord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practise hospitality."
