Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service
Welcome and Introduction
God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son
That whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
In Him was life, and that life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.
And this is the judgment, that the light has come into this world, and we loved darkness rather than light.
God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
Jesus came into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Him should stay in darkness.
Song: I Will Sing The Wondrous Story
1 I will sing the wondrous story
Of the Christ who died for me.
How He left His home in glory
For the cross of Calvary.
I was lost, but Jesus found me,
Found the sheep that went astray,
Threw His loving arms around me,
Drew me back into His way.
2 I was bruised, but Jesus healed me;
Faint was I from many a fall;
Sight was gone, and fears possessed me,
But He freed me from them all.
Days of darkness still come o'er me,
Sorrow's paths I often tread,
But the Saviour still is with me;
By His hand I'm safely led.
3 He will keep me till the river
Rolls its waters at my feet;
Then He'll bear me safely over,
Where the loved ones I shall meet.
Yes, I'll sing the wondrous story
Of the Christ who died for me,
Sing it with the saints in glory,Gathered by the crystal sea.
The Shadows
Shadow of Betrayal : Matthew 26: 14-25
First candle is extinguished
Shadow of Denial : Matthew 26:31-35
Second candle is extinguished
Shadow of Aloneness: Matthew 26:36-45
Third candle is extinguished
Pause for thought….
Shadow of Accusation : Matthew 27:1-2, 11-26
Fourth candle is extinguished
Shadow of Suffering : Matthew 27: 27-31
Fifth candle is extinguished
Pause for prayer ….
Keep us, good Lord,
Under the shadow of your mercy
In this time of uncertainty and distress.
Sustain and support the anxious
and fearful,
And lift up all who are brought low;
That we may rejoice in your comfort
Knowing that nothing can separate us
from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord,
Amen.
Shadow of Crucifixion : Matthew 27:31-44
Sixth candle is extinguished
Song: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
Shadow of Death : Matthew 27:45-50
Seventh candle is extinguished
After the shadows : Isaiah 53:4-9
Conclude in silence ......
